Before Andrew hit the bottom, an Inkgryphon swooped down, and picked him up with its long black talons. The Inkgryphon soared high above the others, burping a spray of black, potent-smelling ink, over Andrew’s face, and hair.

Andrew gasped, coughing up the black liquid. While still in the air, the creature bent its head down, and readied itself to rip out Andrew’s tongue.

A flaming arrow cut through the air, hitting the Inkgryphon’s wings. Almost instantly, the creature’s wings flamed up, like thin paper. It let out a bone-rattling screech, then came crashing down just below the cave. The second it hit the ground, it burst into flame. The other Inkgryphons swarmed in around Andrew, spraying the flaming Inkgryphon with ink. Through the mist of ink, a papery hand reached out, and pulled Andrew from the Inkgryphon’s grasp, and into the cave.

“Quickly now,” Kesper told Andrew, dragging him through the cave as the Inkgryphons swooped in behind them. “We must hurry. The Inkgryphons won’t hesitate to follow us. The others are already far ahead.”

Kesper suddenly veered to the right, running much faster than Andrew thought an older man was capable. Andrew tried his best to keep up with Kesper, but he soon slowed, becoming uneasy. He could see very little of what was ahead of him. The ground where he stepped felt very unstable. With each step, the floor bowed in. It was almost as if he was walking on a thin sheet of paper. Behind him he could hear the thud and rustling of the Inkgryphon’s wings as they rattled together, and their horrible cries.

“Kesper?” Andrew called, “Where are you?”

Kesper appeared ahead of him. He scratched his head, and walked back towards Andrew. “I must have taken a wrong turn. Oh dear. This is bad.” A sound of ripping paper reverberated through the cave, and the floor gave out beneath them and they both fell through the blackness. They landed on top of a pile of dusty papers that flew up into the air like feathers around them.

Above the opening, they could hear the Inkgryphons sift through the cave. They let out a frenzied cry as they all tried to squeeze through the opening, at the same time. The floor above them began to rip even more as the angry creatures tried to free themselves. Trapped and angry, the creatures’ screams echoed through the cave, spewing ink that was the consistency of dark oil.

“Be gone!” Kesper thundered, picking up a large pail and thrust it at the creatures. Its contents spilled out over the Inkgryphons coating them with a black, sticky substance. Instantly, the creatures screaming ceased. Their wings stuck together, meshing over their faces, sealing off the opening in the ceiling.

“Hah, that’s how ceilings are made,” Kesper cried, pulling Andrew up from the pile of papers. “You are safe, now. Once we get out from under this dreadful inky rain, you will see that your trip to Bookend has not been for nothing.” He wiped away a splotch of ink that had fallen on his face, and smiled.
